In March 2022, near Hostomel, shrapnel struck his face. Sergiy lost an eye, and the bones of his facial skull were destroyed. Surgeons removed the old metal implants, re-broke the bones for a precise fit, and rebuilt the anatomy of his cheekbone and eye socket with 3D-printed titanium plates.
